University of Bonn Signage

We are currently developing a campus-wide and cross-facility information and wayfinding system for the University of Bonn—starting with the Poppelsdorf Campus as a pilot project. The goal is a cohesive wayfinding system that functionally connects the very diverse locations of this university of excellence while also creating a strong visual identity.
The design is directly derived from the university’s corporate identity, whose distinctive roof silhouette is inspired by the Baroque Electoral Palace—the historic main building of the University of Bonn. Curves, flowing lines, and characteristic structural details translate dynamism, academic openness, and excellence into a unique design language.
Flat, elegant signage panels meet striking mounting elements that define spaces and provide orientation. The system combines analog and digital information offerings, integrates tactile site maps as well as regulatory accessibility requirements, and simultaneously creates communicative qualities that enhance the visitor experience—for example, through seating that provides information and large-format wall designs in foyers.
A particular challenge is the system’s adaptability to a wide range of architectural contexts: from historic urban spaces to modern campuses, and from landmark-protected facades to contemporary research buildings. The result is a flexible, recognizable system that visibly conveys orientation, identity, and a commitment to service.
