Places of Democracy in Bavaria

Bringing democracy to life. Telling history in a way that brings it to life.
How can the history of democracy be conveyed in a contemporary way? The project ‘Places of Democracy in Bavaria’ translates historical sites of democratic development into a modern, visually striking exhibition experience. On behalf of the Bavarian State Parliament, we developed the visual identity and designed a multimedia travelling exhibition that combines information, narration and interaction.

At the heart of the concept are specially developed graphic novels that stage historical events in a continuous narrative thread. Large-format, bright exhibition elements – formally based on open magazine pages – create proximity and legibility. Scenic illustrations, texts, quotations and biographies are combined with historical documents, maps, diagrams and works of art. Facsimiles with QR codes and interactive media terminals enable visitors to delve deeper into the subject matter on site. An accompanying website makes the project accessible to a wider public and school classes. A comprehensive catalogue ensures the long-term documentation of the project.
The opening event took place in the Maximilianeum, the seat of the Bavarian State Parliament, with State Parliament President Ilse Aigner and former Federal President Joachim Gauck among those in attendance.
