Munich Airport, Terminal 2 and Satellit

Organising complexity. Creating orientation in flux.

The visual communication design concept for Munich Airport is based on the cross-object appearance, which was also developed by our office. It forms the design framework for Terminal 2 with car park P20 and for the Terminal 2 satellite, including the passenger transport system (PTS).

The integrated information and orientation system responds to the high functional requirements of an international transport hub. Flight-related, temporary and up-to-date information must be quickly comprehensible, while passenger-related guidance provides reliable orientation. At the same time, the system makes the architectural and spatial structure of the entire facility easy to understand. Digital media, monitors, large displays and interactive systems play a central role in this and are consistently integrated into the information architecture.

The components of visual communication ensure identity, orientation and a continuous flow of information in the complex process of airport operations. The clear system reduces stress, enhances the quality of the visitor experience and shapes the character of the location. Munich Airport has received multiple awards in international rankings and evaluations – including for the performance of its information and orientation system.

We have been continuously developing this successful system for several years within the framework of framework agreements. This allows new functional requirements, technological developments and changing usage needs to be permanently integrated without compromising design consistency and quality.

The guiding principles of the design concept are the consistency of all system elements, an independent visual language and the design and functional integration into the architecture.
