Living substance – converted farmhouses in the Bregenzerwald

Reading architecture. Experiencing culture and quality.
The book ‘Belebte Substanz – Umgebaute Bauernhäuser im Bregenzerwald’ (Living Substance – Converted Farmhouses in the Bregenzerwald) is dedicated to the careful renovation of historic wooden buildings and their transformation into contemporary living spaces. The design supports the narrative content by translating architecture, materiality and atmosphere into a clear, understated visual concept.

Minimalist architectural drawings, plans and graphics are combined with high-quality architectural photographs. These convey the atmosphere of the historic farmhouses, the quality of the craftsmanship and the vitality of wood as a material. Design elements such as the title motif, choice of paper, format and typography reflect the warmth, feel and processing techniques of wood, making them a sensory experience.
Clear, minimalist typography structures the content in a calm and precise manner. It is informative, understated and at the same time exciting. Simplicity and quality characterise the appearance and authentically convey rural life, tradition and craftsmanship, as well as the high-quality conversion. The design supports the authors' aim of highlighting the opportunities, qualities and future prospects of carefully converted farmhouses for new residential use.
