Freiham Education Campus

Learning connects. Guidance for an open campus.
The Freiham Education Campus is one of the largest school construction projects in the state capital of Munich. Four schools based on the Munich learning centre concept – a primary school, a special education and skills centre, a secondary school and a grammar school – together with the central campus centre offer space for around 3,000 pupils. The campus is complemented by a canteen, library, assembly hall, creative areas, a sports hall and the adjacent Freiham sports park.

We developed a comprehensive visual communication and signage system for the entire educational campus and sports park. It connects all school buildings, the campus centre and, later, the sports park to form a coherent orientation system. Spacious, light and open rooms characterise the architecture – visual communication is an integral part of these rooms and contributes significantly to their atmosphere.

Typography is applied directly to existing surfaces: walls, glass façades and façade surfaces. Large, colourful texts enliven façades and rooms. They provide orientation, create identity and contribute to an open, inspiring learning atmosphere for pupils. Fonts, sizes and styles enter into a conscious dialogue with the architecture. The information provided picks up on the colour and material concept of the buildings and supports intuitive orientation. In the outdoor area, steles with orientation plans lead to the individual buildings of the educational campus and to the sports park.

The Freiham educational campus and sports park meet the requirements for inclusion-oriented information provision. In addition to clear contrasts and easily legible font sizes, tactile orientation and building plans as well as sign elements with raised profile and Braille lettering have been implemented. The result is an orientation system that enables openness, participation and independent use for all.
