Digital memorial book in the German Bundestag

Making remembrance visible. Preserving memory in a contemporary and dignified manner.

We placed the digital memorial book for members of the German Armed Forces who died while serving abroad in front of the Defence Committee meeting room in the Paul Löbe House. Our office was responsible for the conception and design of the location, the stele and the digital application. The aim was to create a space for quiet remembrance that combines dignity, restraint and timeless presence.

The classic motif of an open book was used to transfer the analogue memorial book to a digital medium. A portrait-format touchscreen forms the central interface of the application. The installation combines a monolithic, heavy black cube with a floating, slanted screen in a bronze-coloured frame. Subtle lighting gives the space a transcendent character. The formal analogies to a high-quality bound book with a cover were chosen deliberately.

The digital application displays an excerpt from the list of deceased persons, sorted vertically by date of death. The display is scrollable and search functions can be activated. Subtle animations support intuitive operation. A calm, purist layout completes the high-quality, timeless appearance of the installation – deliberately free of pathos, exaggeration or fashionable references.
