Munich Documentation Centre for the History of National Socialism
Since May 1, 2015, Munich has a central place of learning and remembrance of the history of National Socialism. The location of the place is significant. The light coloured new building is located on the premises of the “Brown House”, the party headquarters of the NSDAP. It stands in the midst of buildings and squares used by the National Socialists and whose language was power, representation and exaggeration. The architecture of the new building symbolically distances itself from these buildings and is thus an inseparable part of the appearance. The windows provide a view into the interior, and vice versa, the environment is involved in the exhibition by free visual references.
We continued this idea in the corporate design. It shows the institution as a place of communication, exchange, information and critical discussion. It counteracts historical design elements, avoids formal quotations and elemental colours of the NS regime. Stereotypical harshness is contrasted with a light and pure appearance. The corporate design is explained, interpreted and argued in an objective and calm manner. Naturally and complex, not artistic or even ideological.
